City of Fullerton Will Assume RDA Responsibilities

The remains of the Fullerton Redevelopment Agency will be assumed by the City of Fullerton after the Council voted 4-0 to assume responsibility.

Council met Tuesday in a brief special meeting to make a final decision on the agency that has power to consider an area blighted and diverts property tax money in such areas to fund their activities. Councilman F. Richard Jones was absent from the meeting.

Last month, judges from the California Supreme Court upheld a law passed by the California State Legislature that effectively kills the 400-plus redevelopment agencies throughout the state, including Fullerton’s. However, the Court also struck down a law that would give cities the option to keep the redevelopment agency by paying the state.

City Manager Joe Felz said that an oversight committee consisting of Mayor Sharon Quirk-Silva, two members of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, a city staffer and one member each from the Fullerton School Board, the Fullerton Joint Union High School Board and the North Orange County Community College Board will ensure that the redevelopment agency’s bills are paid and that its projects will see their completion.
