Fullertonians will have to wait nearly a month until a verification process is completed by the Orange County Registrar of Voters if a recall effort qualifies for the ballot this year.
Organizers for the recall of Fullerton City Councilmen Don Bankhead, F. Richard Jones and Pat McKinley submitted more than 17,000 signatures for each candidate to the City Clerk Thursday.
The three councilmen are targeted for what organizers call a “simple failure to provide competent leadership” for Fullerton, especially their public handling of residents’ anger after the police beating death of homeless man Kelly Thomas in July 2011 in which two officers were charged.
The city's verification process of the signatures went long after the official City Hall closing time of 5:00 p.m.
According to the Friends for Fullerton’s Future website, McKinley earned the most signatures at 17,603, Jones with 17,587 and Bankhead garnered 17,064 signatures.
