Living in a metropolitan area has a way of disconnecting people from agriculture, but Adam Alder made a public comment during last Tuesday's council meeting that he is working to start a community garden in Fullerton. The message resonated with a small group of people, and it brings up a dynamic set of questions about how it could be done. How should it be built? Would the fruits and vegetables be organic?
The first objective set forth by Alder is find a landowner who could support such a project, so the first question is can it be done privately? Ideally, the garden would be on a 1/4 acre (roughly 11,000 square feet) of land that is currently not being used within the Fullerton city limits. A variety of gardening options are available ranging from tilling the soil to using garden boxes to grow crops.
The public sector has not been ruled out either, as an upcoming meeting has also been scheduled with Acting Director of Parks & Recreation Hugo Curiel. The discussion will consider whether the city would be willing to back the garden by loaning property. One property that Alder is interested in is the former site of The Salvation Army store off Raymond Avenue, South of Chapman.
