Recall Vote Set For June 5

Mayor Pro Tem Pat McKinley and Councilmen Don Bankhead and F. Richard "Dick" Jones will face the voters of Fullerton in a June 5 special election concurrent with California’s primary election.

Last month, recall supporters gathered enough signatures against the three targeted councilmen to qualify for the ballot and will be under the auspices of the County of Orange.

With that matter settled by the Council during Tuesday’s meeting, the next step is who will run to replace the three should they be recalled from office. Lucinda Williams, the City Clerk, said during the City Council meeting that prospective candidates can file for candidacy as early as today but must file before March 9.

Calls for recalling the three councilmen intensified last Summer in the height of protests against the beating death of Kelly Thomas by Fullerton police officers.

Developer and Friends For Fullerton’s Future head blogger Tony Bushala, who spearheaded the movement to recall Bankhead, Jones and McKinley, is eagerly anticipating who will run to possibly replace the trio. He said after the meeting that Fullerton residents are finally realizing the incompetence of city leadership.

“Now the people of Fullerton have finally woken up to see how incompetent our supposed leaders are actually not leaders,” Bushala said outside City Hall. “The recall will be successful. Fullerton has woken up and smelled the roses.”
